Dumpster Fire DEVO - Day 17

DAY 17: The Inner Critic
By Pastor Casey Taylor

READ Exodus 3:11

Moses questioned his worthiness to answer God’s call: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” Moses is a classic example of imposter syndrome, that feeling that no matter what you’ve done or how well you’ve done it, somebody’s gonna find out you’re a fraud. You don’t know what you’re doing. You have no right to be here.

His inner critic threatens to sabotage God’s call. He’s stuck in a negative feedback loop, replaying lies and half-truths and worse-case-scenarios. Moses wasn’t entirely wrong. He would definitely face challenges, even pushback from his own people. But none of that compared with his own inner critic.

Like many of us, he let his inner critic take the lead, focusing on his inadequacies instead of God’s power. We all have an inner critic that tries to talk us out of what God calls us to do. But our identity and ability don’t come from our own strength—they come from God’s.

When your inner critic says, “Who am I to do this?” remember God’s answer to Moses: “I am with you.” God’s presence is what equips us, not our own qualifications.

REFLECT
When have you doubted your ability to live out a calling or purpose? How can you remind yourself that God’s presence is your strength?

PRAY:
Father, silence my inner critic with the truth that You are with me. Help me trust in Your strength rather than my own. Amen.
