The Way DAY 15 - The Way of Love
Day 15 - The Way of Love
1 Corinthians 13:1-17
People often struggle to use their freedom to love others. Study 1 Corinthians and you’ll see Paul confronting an entitled church. Many Corinthians thought freedom meant liberty to do whatever you want. They took advantage of each other at every opportunity, leading Paul to that famous passage we often hear at weddings, 1 Cor 13, “Love is patient, love is kind…love is not SELF-seeking!” You won’t be free until you ditch “What about me?”
What would it look like in some of our relationships to ditch that attitude? Husbands and wives, do you think “what about me” in your marriage? Or do you take the initiative to serve and bless your spouse? That’s really the mutual service and submission in marriage Paul’s talking about in Ephesians 6.
What about other people we’re close to? Siblings? Parents? Kids? Roommates? Do you think a lot about what everyone else should be doing for you? What if you said, “I’m done with ‘what about me.’ I’m free to love! I’m going to be helpful, no matter what.”
If we’re not careful, we can filter our faith through “what about me.” Instead of asking, “What does this church do for me,” what if we asked, “How can help here?” What if we ask, “How can we bless people other churches aren’t reaching?” When churches care more about themselves, they die. When they die to themselves to care about others, they live. Dying to our selfish selves is the way of love, the Way of Jesus.
REFLECT
What are some tangible ways you can express your freedom to love?
PRAY
Lord, fill me up again with your love. Make everything I think, say, and do be motivated by your love coursing through me. Amen.
